66th NHK Kouhaku Utagassen 2015~2016: X Japan comeback,Arashi,Golden Bomber and more

2 Jan

NHK’s Kouhaku is one of the most prestigious music shows in a year. Artistes who are invited are chosen according to several factors – the results of this year’s activities, public opinion and performance concept. Take a look at the highlights from last night, have they lived up to expectations?

X Japan – Forever Love/Born to be Free
X Japan disbanded in 1997 after appearing on Kouhaku, but regrouped in 2007. 2015 marks their return to Kouhaku after an absence of 18 years. Remembering their bandmates Hide and Taiji who passed away in 1998 and 2011 respectively, 2 guitars which belonged to them were placed onstage, as if to show that the band was performing as 7 instead of 5.

Leader Yoshiki says “We didn’t think that we’d get a chance at this stage. We’d like to thank the fans who supported us all these time, because of you, we got a 2nd life.

Arashi – Star Wars Collaboration / Sakura/ Ai wo Sakebe
Tying in with the popular movie, the members of Arashi transformed into Star Wars warriors complete with lightsabers and sang their hit songs for the year together with the Droids of the Galactic universe.

NMB48 – 365nichi no Kamihikouki
I have no idea whether they’re trying to promote “Asa ga Kita”, Yamamoto Sayaka, the song or NMB48, but seeing how the cast of “Asa ga Kita” joined in the performance in the end, i guess the point was to promote the drama! Yamamoto Sayaka still got a huge deal out of this though, the guitar (which is actually unnecessarily in the context of her performance) and her solo opening made her stand out so much that the rest of NMB48 simply faded into the background. Most importantly, she got to stand beside Tamaki Hiroshi who is one of my absolute favourites!

AKB48 10th Year Anniversary – Aitakkata/Flying Get/Heavy Rotation
The concept of this performance was “Magic”. The moment when i read reports about it, alarm bells sounded because god knows how many lame magic tricks AKB48 has attempted in the past year. The real magic came when Maeda Atsuko and Oshima Yuko appeared out of nowhere to join the group. Takamina is shocked, but it is afterall the group’s 10th anniversary so i’m sure we’ll be seeing more Acchan-Yuko in 2016.

Ayase Haruka, Perfume, V6 x Disney Medley
Disney is quite a regular fixture on Kouhaku and Perfume often collaborates with Disney, but we’d never discover how cute Ayase Haruka is if not for this performance. She sings so well and dances like she’s part of Perfume!

Golden Bomber – Memeshikute
Golden Bomber cannot escape the vicious cycle of promoting”Memeshikute” and even Ayase Haruka is innocently asking “How much longer can they continue with this song?” but Golden Bomber always makes it fresh for the audience. In this performance, Darvish Kenji is dressed in a kimono but Kyan and Utahiroba Jun strips him to reveal that he’s actually dressed for a sumo match. The screen shows a computer system randomly picking his opponent from the Kouhaku judges, and it settles on Naoki Matayoshi, an award winning novelist and comedian. Naoki Matayoshi is carried into the ring and he loses to Darvish, but instead of getting a prize, sumo wrestlers pickup Darvish and knocks him against a temple bell, which is sounded traditionally to mark the start of a new year. Darvish ends up in a daze and Naoki describes his state using a scroll with the words “Hibana”(“fire sparks”). “Hibana” is actually the title of his award winning novel.

Johnny’s Countdown 2015~2016: Shuji & Akira comeback, dream units and more!

1 Jan

This year’s Johnny’s Countdown was held in Tokyo Dome and the hosts were the adorkable Arashi. Hey!Say!JUMP and V6 had a concert and Kouhaku commitments respectively so they were filmed separately. Nevertheless, this year was really interesting as fans could choose what they want to see and hear.

Segments and notable moments from the show are summarized below:

  • Songs you want to hear from each group(Fan Request)
Kanjani8 had a very nice song chosen for them, “Osaka Romanesque”.
  • Collaboration special
Noriyuki Higashiyama sings Kondo Masahiko’s “Andalucia Ni Akogarete” with the Johnny’s Dancing Kings.
    Ex-NEWS & Kanjani8 member Uchi Hiroki also makes a brief appearance back-dancing.
  • Song exchange medley
Kanjani8 sings Sexy Zone’s “Cha Cha Cha Champion” in hilarious cosplay.
Kis-my-ft2 Yokoo breaks a note while singing Chinen Yuri’s solo in Hey!Say!JUMP’s “Ultra Music Power”.
Arashi performs NEWS debut song “NEWS Nippon”. Unlike Yokoo, Ohno sings Tegoshi’s high note flawlessly.
  • KAT-TUN 10th year anniversary
In celebration of their 10th anniversary, they started off with “Bokura no Machi de” from 2006. This was the only song i like out of their 3 songs. They also sang “In Fact” and “Kiss Kiss Kiss” from these years. This is also the last countdown for 4-member KAT-TUN.
  • Kinki Kids 20th year anniversary
This pair stopped dancing many years ago but this time they danced to “Yamedaide, Pure” from 1999. This is a rare song in Kinki’s playlist so it’s a must-watch!
  • Dream units you want to see, Top 5 (Fan Request)

Sakurai_KikuchiFuma

No.5: Sakurai Sho & Kikuchi Fuma
Song: Arashi
Sakurai Sho is Fuma’s senior from Keio University and apparently Fuma’s father wrote the lyrics to Arashi’s debut song. Fuma looks so enthusiastic next to Sho but i heard he’s actually a Akanishi shipper?

Ohno_Higashiyama

No.4: Noriyuki Higashiyama & Ohno Satoshi
Song: Nihon Yoitoko Makafushigi
Higashiyama took great care of Ohno before his debut. The song they performed is covered in Arashi’s latest album “Japonism”. Ohno shows some fear before attempting a dangerous backflip which 50-year old Higashiyama did without hesitating.

[Surprise: Yamashita Tomohisa & Kamenashi Kazuya]
[Song: Seishun Amigo]
According to a GirlsChannel report, Yamapi was originally not scheduled for Johnny’s Countdown as he had MV filming overseas. Fans had no option to nominate the duo but they still insisted on sending in requests. The overwhelming response must have resulted in Yamapi’s appearance. Aside from it being the biggest surprise of the night, it was also Kame and Yamapi’s reunion after 6 years so the fans in Tokyo Dome exploded in joy. Kame thanked the fans in the end by giving us a flashback of the Shuji-Akira bromance 10 years ago – a backhug for Yamapi.

Shuji to Akira
Those smiles…I think it would not be exaggerating to say that this scene is worth watching 100 times over!

matsujun kawai

No.3:Matsumoto Jun & Kawai Fumito
Song: Wish
Kawai is well-known for his dance impersonations of Matsujun and despite Matsujun’s resistance, his impersonations delight everyone.

Kitayama Okura

No.2: Kitayama Hiromitsu & Okura Tadayoshi
Song: (Each other’s songs)
They are apparently good friends!

SubaruTakki

No.1: Shibutani Subaru & Takizawa Hideaki
Song: Ashita ni Mukatte
These 2 were known as “Takizawa of the East” and “Subaru of the West” during Johnny’s Junior’s Golden Age. I do not know much about this era as it was 17 years ago, but judging from the fan votes here, this pair was huge and still is! “Ashita ni Mukatte” is actually an Arashi song which they often performed in their junior days.

If you want to watch the whole show:

To conclude, this year’s Johnny’s Countdown is a memory worth keeping! Wishing all a Happy New Year!

Performances from Best Artist 2015 and KAT-TUN Taguchi’s shocking announcement

25 Nov

【実況・感想】ベストアーティスト2015

The biggest news of the night: Taguchi Junnosuke announces departure from KAT-TUN and Johnny’s Jimusho. Taguchi says he’s turning 30 soon and this decision was made for the sake of his future.

Taguchi’s announcement

I am just sad that this once-upon-million-selling-group is disintegrating in this manner.

On to the performances…

Johnny’s Family

Hey!Say!JUMP – Kimi Attraction

Arashi – Sakura/Aozora no Shita, Kimi no tonari/ Ai wo Sakebe
Matsumoto is so dorky in this performance and as usual “Ai wo Sakebe” is a godly performance!

Kinki Kids – Yume wo mireba Kizutsuku koto mo aru

V6 – Wait for you/ 20th anniversary medley

Johnny’s Love Songs Medley Part 1
Kinki Kids
– Ai no Katamari
Kanjani8 – Tsuyoku Tsuyoku Tsuyoku
Johnny’s WEST – All my love
Hey!Say!JUMP – AinoArika
Arashi – Love so sweet

Johnny’s Love Songs Medley Part 2
TOKIO – Love you only
KAT-TUN – Kiss Kiss Kiss
Tackey & Tsubasa – Ai ha Takaramono
NEWS – Ai Kotoba
V6 – Ai nanda
I saw Girlschannel users looking forward to NEWS’ “Ai Kotoba” and indeed it’s a GREAT song!

LDH Inc.

Sandaime J Soul Brothers – Summer Madness

E-girls – Dance dance dance

48/46 Group

AKB48 – 365nichi no Kami Hikouki / Kuchibiru ni Be My Baby
I prefer the Asa ga Kita song over Kuchibiru. Kuchibiru has a good tune, really colorful like what you’d find in a carnival but the lyrics are simpler than simple, and cutesy just doesn’t work for most members now. Quite honestly, i’m cringing whenever Takamina does the winks and pouts.

HKT48 – Shekarashika
NMB48 – Durian Shonen
SKE48 – Mae no Meri
AKB48 – Heavy Rotation

Nogizaka46 – Ima, Hanashitai dare ka ga iru

Johnny’s idol you wouldn’t want to marry

23 Oct

In a Menjoy! (female magazine) poll, 200 females in their 20s to 40s were asked which Johnny’s member (among SMAP, TOKIO and V6) they’d not want to marry. Results are below.

3rd Place: Morita Go(V6) –21%

“He’s a casanova”
“I don’t like his face”

With his blonde hair, Morita’s gyaru image is probably what put off females.

2nd Place: Inagaki Goro(SMAP) –35%

“He likes himself, he wouldn’t be able to love others”
“He’s funny but it feels like it’d be difficult to live with him”

Goro is good looking but it’ll also be difficult for his wife because of this.

1st Place: Nakai Masahiro(SMAP) — 48%

“He seems troublesome because he loves cleanliness.”
“He seems very stingy. It’s ok if he wants to save on expenses but i can’t bear stinginess.”
“It seems like he can do anything alone. He doesn’t seem suited to living with others.”

Nakai himself has said that the probability of marriage is low.

On Wide Show, Nakai said that the chances of the remaining SMAP bachelors getting married is even lower.

AKB48 – Ponytail to Shushu/ Everyday, Kachuusha / Koisuru Fortune Cookie (Kimutaku center)

Despite the annoyance on his face, he performed the full choreography perfectly, impressing netizens with his professionalism. In the end Kimutaku said “Music Station does things like this?”

Other members who attracted most attention tonight…

Many comments from GirlsChannel on Mayuyu’s growing beauty and how she’s shaken off the idol look.

Within 48 fandom, many gushed over cute Paruru’s healthy return to senbatsu. I have to say Paruru’s signature twintails are really cute! Many are calling Payuyu the strongest combi in AKB48.

Johnny’s Family

Johnny’s performances are quite fun this time around as we have live video footage of Arashi from their Miyagi concert, and medleys where the idols are grouped according to their generation. It is quite interesting to see for example, Nishikido Ryo standing next to NEWS, and KAT-TUN performing Real Face with just 4 members. *Heart pinch*

Which Johnny’s generation do you belong to? Mine is Ikemen Generation.

Performances from Arashi,V6,AKB48 and more on Music Station

29 Aug

I like this song alot because the tune brings back memories from the Love So Sweet days and the lyrics i imagine would hit the heart directly. This is meant to be performed for the bride during a wedding ceremony and apparently that is what Arashi did in their music video.

Translation of lyrics(credit yurikizero):

Now that I think about it, we’ve known each other for a long time
But (today) in the whole world, there isn’t anyone prettier than you

Our long-awaited Madonna is here
(Today) We’ll celebrate with all of our friends from back then

It’s so nostalgic, Baby Suddenly, it’s like we’re still seventeen
Sure enough, you’re a super lady As always, you’re a prize out of our reach

Gotta tell this “I love you” to someone dear to me
You’re an idol even now Everyone loves you
Let’s love each other forever Congratulations
You’ve just gotta become happy, Baby
Shout this love to a wonderful future

You’re so dazzling, it makes me kind of embarrassed
But (today) anyone in the world would fall in love with you

When you sign that certificate,
All the friends here (today) are the witnesses especially for our Madonna

Let’s take some pictures together, Baby All around, there’s love & peace
Let’s talk about our memories The same way we were back then

Gotta say this “I love you” now to our beloved
He’s a perfect match for you We all give up
Receiving so many cheers and love Oh! Everyone applauds
When you say you’re happy, that’s probably when we’ll start crying, Baby
Going to a wonderful future Ring the bells

Gotta tell this “I love you” to someone dear to me
You’re an idol even now Everyone loves you
Let’s love each other forever Congratulations
You’ve just gotta become happy, Baby
Shout this love to a wonderful future

Darling Darling Darling Laugh while crying
Darling Darling Darling Congratulations This is true love
Congratulations It’s our true love

V6 – 2oth Anniversary Special Medley
V6 is making alot of media appearances lately what with promotions for 24hr TV and the release of their new album. Guys are now ojisans(with the exception of Miyake Ken who defies the laws of time) but are continuing to explore new ground in music. The first song “Wait for you” is produced by Lady Gaga herself! For a second, i thought i was listening to One Direction.

Morning Musume ’15 – Oh my wish!
I do not like the electro dance pop that this group likes to release but their dances are always impressive.

AKB48 – Halloween Night
So they decided to up the gimmickry and include magic tricks into their performance. While i fail to understand more and more what is going on with this song,  i did enjoy the magic trick performances. The Sasshi-Takamina trick at the end fails and Takamina had to do a dogeza.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu – Crazy Party Night ~Pumpkin no Gyakushu~
Cute dance and crazy visuals which in my opinion is more like Halloween.

Selected performances below….

Che’nelle – Happiness(with Matsushita Nao on the piano)
FINALLY this song has been performed! I can never get enough of it. Beautiful voice and lyrics, all self-penned by the singer herself!

Johnny’s Family

A full blown Johnny’s artistes collaboration to celebrate Kondo Masahiro’s 35th year of debut.
This is practically a miracle cause Johnny’s artistes are split into 2 factions and they have never collaborated in this manner. The inclusion of SMAP really means alot for the fans as well as for the agency. Erm wait, where’s Yamapi?

In order of appearance:
1. Johnny’s WEST – Ee jya nai ka

The rules for live singing must have been changed cos these girls are sounding as good as their CD. Just take a look at the past years’ FNS performances and you’ll know what I mean. What to lookout for, the Mayuki combo with their Christmas jingle!

Performances from TV Tokyo Music Festival 2014

27 Jun

A music festival featuring some major jpop artistes was held yesterday to celebrate TV Tokyo’s 50th anniversary. Guests include TOKIO/V6/Kanjani8/NEWS/AKB48/SKE48/NMB48/HKT48/Nogizaka46/Morning Musume OG/Morning Musume ’14/Kahara Tomomi/Golden Bomber/Ikimonogakari/Nishino Kana/Hitoto Yo/Moriyama Naotaro/Sukima Switch/May J.

One of the highlights was Goto Maki’s return to Morning Musume OG after a hiatus of 2.5 years. Once the golden girl of Morning Musume, Goto Maki’s performance with the group brings us back to the days when Morning Musume was at its best.

AKB48 Kashiwagi Yuki, who is known to be a fan of Morning Musume, posted on her Google+: “Everyone in Morning Musume OG were shining brightly. My tears are coming. I like them after all! Ishikawa Rika san too! Goto Maki san is so cute!”

Morning Musume OG – Morning Coffee/ LOVE Machine/ Renai Revolution 21
Morning Musume ’14 – Password is 0

NMB48 – Ibiza Girl
The 48-group also showed up in full force, together with official rivals Nogizaka46. The new Queen of AKB48 Watanabe Mayu took up center for past hits previously centered by Maeda Atsuko and Oshima Yuko. The sister groups also showed off their new image after being reinforced with new members from this year’s grand reshuffle.

AKB48 – Labrador Retriever/Koisuru Fortune Cookie
HKT48 – Melon Juice
Another interesting performance was “Labrador Retriever”, as it was performed by the newly selected senbatsu members from the recent general elections.

NEWS – weeeek/ ONE -for the win-

Golden Bomber – Memeshikute
These guys are still popular for their one-hit “Memeshikute” and funny skits. Unfortunately, their skits are sometimes based on Japanese comedy so only the natives will get it.

V6 – Wa ni natte Odorou/Darling/Sexy Honey Bunny!
This is for the older Johnny’s fans. Anyone?

May J – Let it Go (Japanese version)
This globally popular song has been leading the karaoke charts in Japan for a very long time.

Kanjani8 – Zukkoke Otoko Michi/King of Otoko
Kanjani8 also went out of the studio to perform. Bringing us on a tour of TV Tokyo, they gathered a whole bunch of employees to join in on a mass dance.Even the CEO of TV Tokyo showed up.

Ikimonogatari – Arigatou/Love Song wa Tomaranai
This is for those who love pure Japanese music.
